In the library, Goreton Stump sits alone. His attention is taken by a sudden movement in the corner of the room. He sees black dust falling off the shelves onto the floor. Goreton goes to investigate. He takes a book off the shelf - he opens it - the pages are blank. The life of the book has been set free - it has escaped. He checks a handful of titles - they are all blank. The books are all on Greek mythology. The letters have dripped onto the floor, now re-made, they have a new life. Letters formed into an army of evil. They move stealthily and can change, backwards and forwards between their forms - harpies, cyclops, chimera, gorgons. The shadows move closer to Goreton. Black dust like iron filings forming into small irregular shapes around him. He opens his mouth to speak - they enter and move within. |

A city under siege. As the snow falls the curfew bell rings. People have changed, they are so suspicious now, they spy on one another. I can't remember back then. I should be able to remember how I got into this. I know I've killed before - that's about all. I just follow the orders that are left for me. Who am I acting for? Then I discovered something. It was the day after the General Election. |

A body, it was a body. Yes a body visible from the stairs. She stretched over the banister to see the television. She was looking through the glass at the top of the door. Universal, RKO horror films - Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Wolfman. Nearly always Karloff, sometimes Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jnr. Not so much fear as ritual. They had travelled through death. Evil was always so enthralling. The monster was heroic, striking out, acting beyond words. Forever searching - for something; destined to be disappointed. A modern human. |
